Waste Management’s almost 100 renewable energy projects produce enough electricity to power more than 800,000 homes and save the equivalent of 8.2 million barrels of oil per year.

  • We currently supply enough landfill gas to create more than 250 megawatts of green energy – enough to power 225,000 homes, replacing over 2 million barrels of oil per year.

  • Wheelabrator Technologies converts municipal solid waste to energy by burning, saving more than 6 million barrels of oil and generating enough clean, renewable energy to power 600,000 homes each year.

Waste Management is is proud to pioneer a state of the art energy recovery program that features Methane Recovery. This "total recycling" program uses the methane gas produced by decomposing trash at a landfill to run giant reciprocating piston engines which turn generators and actually produce electricity that is added to the power grid.

Waste Management has two such plants operating now in the region. They are located in Des Moines, IA and Bennington, NE. The plant in Bennington, is actually owned by Omaha Public Power District but was built, operated, and supplied gas by Waste Management of Nebraska, Inc. and is currently being expanded to double it's current output.

Waste Management is also featuring our "Think Green" advertising campaign that is running on cable TV across America. This campaign highlight's WM's success in providing quality waste removal and a full range of recycling options that will impact your family for years to come. Green is not only our color, but our commitment to the quality of the planet we all share.
